The Jab-Cross combination, often referred to as the “1-2,” is a fundamental striking sequence in boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts. This combination is both simple and effective, used to create openings, apply pressure, and set up more complex techniques. Here’s a step-by-step description of how to perform the Jab-Cross combination:
1. Starting Position: Begin in your fighting stance, with your lead foot slightly forward, knees slightly bent, and hands up protecting your chin. Your lead hand (typically the left hand for orthodox fighters) should be positioned in front of your face, while your rear hand (typically the right hand) is close to your chin.
2. The Jab (1):
• Extend the Lead Hand: Quickly snap your lead hand straight out, aiming to make contact with your opponent’s face or upper body. The jab should be fast and sharp, using your shoulder and core to generate speed.
• Rotate the Shoulder: As you throw the jab, slightly rotate your lead shoulder forward, which helps protect your chin and adds power to the punch.
• Retract the Hand: Immediately after making contact, retract your hand quickly back to its starting position to protect your face and prepare for the next punch.
3. The Cross (2):
• Rotate the Hips: As your jab hand returns, rotate your hips and shoulders to the opposite side, preparing to throw the cross. This rotation generates power for the cross.
• Extend the Rear Hand: Throw your rear hand straight forward, aiming for the same target as the jab or slightly lower. The cross is a more powerful punch, driven by the rotation of your hips and shoulders.
• Pivot the Rear Foot: To maximize power, pivot on the ball of your rear foot as you throw the cross, allowing your body to rotate fully.
• Return to Guard: After the cross makes contact, quickly retract your rear hand back to your chin and return to your fighting stance.
4. Flow and Rhythm: The Jab-Cross combination should flow smoothly, with minimal pause between the two punches. The jab sets up the cross, and the power generated from the jab’s recoil helps to deliver a stronger cross.
5. Maintain Balance: Throughout the combination, maintain a strong base by keeping your feet grounded and your weight balanced. This ensures you can move, defend, or throw additional strikes immediately after the combination.
6. Follow Through: After executing the Jab-Cross, be ready to follow up with additional strikes, move out of range, or defend against any counter-attacks.
