The GI-specific ankle pick takedown is a powerful and technical move in jujitsu, utilising the grips available in the GI to gain control and execute the takedown. Here’s a step-by-step description of how to perform this technique:
1. Establish a Grip: Begin by securing a strong grip on your opponent’s lapel with one hand. The grip should be firm, close to their collar, and ideally on the same side as the leg you plan to target. Your other hand should be ready to reach down for the ankle.
2. Set Up the Position: Use your lapel grip to pull your opponent slightly forward and off balance. As you do this, lower your level by bending your knees and dropping your hips, preparing to reach for their ankle.
3. Control the Distance: Maintain tension in your lapel grip to keep your opponent close and prevent them from stepping back or regaining balance. Your posture should be low, with your weight evenly distributed, ready to shoot in for the pick.
4. Reach for the Ankle: With your free hand, reach down towards your opponent’s ankle on the same side as your lapel grip. Your hand should grab firmly around the back of the ankle or just above the heel.
5. Execute the Takedown: Pull sharply on the lapel to continue breaking your opponent’s balance while simultaneously lifting and pulling the ankle towards you. The combined force of these actions will cause your opponent to lose their balance and fall.
6. Follow Through: As your opponent goes down, maintain control of the lapel and ankle. Use your body weight to drive them to the mat, and be ready to follow them down into a dominant position, such as side control or mount.
7. Secure the Position: Once your opponent is on the ground, quickly transition into a secure position to maintain control and prevent any counter-attacks.
The GI-specific ankle pick takedown is effective because it utilises the grips available in the GI to manipulate your opponent’s balance and positioning. It’s a high-percentage move, especially when your opponent is standing tall or over-committed in their stance.
